Good mental health is characterised by a person’s ability to fulfil a number of key functions and activities, including:

  • the ability to learn
  • the ability to feel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotions
  • the ability to form and maintain good relationships with others
  • the ability to cope with and manage change and uncertainty.

The Mental Health Foundation highlight the importance of:

  • Talking about your feelings
  • Regular exercise
  • A good diet
  • Keeping in touch with friends
  • Asking for help
  • Taking a break
  • Do something you are good at
  • Accept who you are
  • Care for others

It is acknowlegded that experiencing positive mental health and wellbeing means that students are able to make the most of their time at school, allowing them to be the best that they can be.

Information & Resources for School

Conscious breathing, also known as breathwork or controlled breathing, is the perfect wellness strategy both adults and pupils of any age, as it
addresses core areas of health, physical, mental and emotional, in a simple, accessible way. External influences and emotional states affect our breathing and through conscious breathing we can influence our mental, emotional and physical state.

Benefits of a regular breathwork practice:

  • More energy
  • Approved creativity
  • Enhanced mindfulness & focus
  • Relaxation
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced anxiety & depression
  • Increased resilience
  • Greater ability to manage emotions
  • Increased ability to handle stress
  • Reduction in bullying

YES@ Areté Learning Trust have been providing staff and parent training as well as group and 1-2-1 sessions for students (primary, secondary and post 16) since March 2022. We have more and more evidence that providing students with access to breathwork can improve self regulation and wellbeing.
